Thanks for the kind comments on the first chapter (I'm going to tweak it a little in the near future).

Not sure if writing is my forte or not!  With that said - this project will be on hold for a while (work & life is getting in the way right now).  And I need to rethink my premise - I was going in a direction that had been touched upon before & don't really want to go that way now (a very keen eye helped me to see that & I humbly thank you).

So - sure hope I can get past this first chapter with something totally new :-) maybe by Christmas 2010.

I'm itching to work on a new video (but gotta get through my real-life obligations first)!!!

I'll be Home for Christmas

This is my very first attempt at writing (other than a small bullet challenge with other Gunsmokers).  This story kept poking at me as I was getting ready for work in the moring & it kept developing (I had to cut my showers short because I got my best ideas there & had to quickly make notes before it would go *POOF* out of my head).  I know it's a little late to do a Christmas story, but I was inspired by amandavocalist (Tina Benedict) and all of the amazing Gunsmoke fanfiction writers.  Don't know how soon the rest of the story will be fit to post (I don't have a Beta).

I’ll be home for Christmas

I’m dreaming tonight of a place I love
Even more than I usually do
And although I know it’s a long road back
I promise you

I’ll be home for Christmas
You can count on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents under the tree

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I’ll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Chapter 1

The sound of the clickety-clack of the tracks and the gentle sway of the train had lulled her into a relaxed state of mind. The past year had been full of activity. She had finally begun to put into motion all of the plans for the changes she was making in her life. A feeling of excitement had combined with trepidation – she had longed for this for such a long time. For years she had put her desires on hold. Now was her time to take control of her life and the direction it was taking. People who knew her viewed her as an independent woman who had complete control of her life, but was that really true? She had been a true pioneer in many aspects of her life – owning her own business, making her own decisions, freely traveling across the country … but there was always the ache she felt that something was missing.

It had been a long journey, but it going to be well worth it. Dressed in her prettiest travelling suit, the beautiful redhead always drew appreciative stares - even after being on the train for this length of time. She had kept herself busy going over her many lists and thinking about her Christmas plans.

‘I do hope he’ll like what I picked out for him, she smiled to herself as she once again looked through her papers.

A sweet voice interrupted her thoughts.

“Ahem,” the older lady coughed, “you must not have heard my question.”

“Oh, I am so sorry,” she said as she set the papers on her lap. “I was preoccupied with my notes. Now what was it you asked me?”

“Is someone special going to meet you at the station, my dear?”  The elderly lady had been her travelling companion since she got on the train earlier that morning in Topeka. “From the way you’ve been studying your folio and staring out the window you seem to have a lot on your mind.”

“Yes, my family will be there to greet me.”

“Oh that’s nice. And where was it you were heading, again? I’m afraid my memory isn’t what it used to be.”

The pretty redhead laughed to herself, she was used to nosy women trying to get information out of her, “Dodge City, Kansas,” was her brief reply.

“Oh my – I’ve heard that’s quite a dangerous place.  All kinds of outlaws running afoul and shooting people!!   Now you sure someone will be there to meet you? A woman travelling by herself – I would hate to think of someone,” she moved in closer to the redhead, “molesting you.”

“Don’t worry about me. My family is what you might say the ‘protective type’ – I’ll be fine, I assure you.”

“Why are you travelling so far from home this time of year? “

“I’ve been attending to family business matters,” the younger woman replied. Many years ago she had learned to be ambiguous in her answers about her life and her business at the risk of offending the more gentile members of society and also due to her relationship with a particular Marshall.

“How fascinating, what type of business is your family in?” the lady gushed.

Not sure how much information would offend the elder lady, she remained vague with her answer, “Oh we dabble in this and that ...”

Seeming satisfied with the answer, the elder woman proceeded to tell her of her own travelling destination and plans.

“… I’m visiting my relatives in Denver. I’ve come all the way from New York City. I promised my granddaughter that I’d bring her the latest fashions. My goodness, I’ve certainly have seen a lot of uncivilized country on my way out here. How long have you lived out here, my dear?”

“About 20 years, but I’ve been away from home for the better part of this past year.”

The older woman gazed at the redhead in amazement – how had such a lovely lady lived out here for 20 years?

“Five miles to Dodge City,” the conductor announced.

Grateful for the interruption after the litany of questions, Kitty was now able to think about the promises she’d made when she left Dodge City.

Looking wistfully out at the endless prairie she thought to herself, “I promised that I’d be home for Christmas and this was one promise I just couldn’t break!”

New to this ...

I do have something I'm working on - just might be a long time till it gets posted on here!
